Golden Globes 2024: what are the best and worst moments of the ceremony?

Cinema

Expected every year as a foretaste of the Oscars scheduled in March, the 2024 Golden Globes Awards were held in Los Angeles last Sunday. It featured a host of stars, including Emma Stone, Margot Robbie, or Timothée Chalamet, and a number of memorable moments. Throwback to the moments that marked the event, from powerful speeches to bad jokes.

Lily Gladstone’s powerful speech

Every awards ceremony has its share of moving and committed speeches. For this 2024 edition of the Golden Globes, Lily Gladstone’s intervention stood out. The 37-year-old American actress dedicated her very first Golden Globe for “Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama”, for her role as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), to her indigenous origins. Clutching the award tightly in her hands, she opened her speech with a few words in her native Blackfeet language, and then switched to English to thank everyone in the room.

As the committed actress received her award, she reminded her audience of the place of aboriginal communities in cinema: “In the past, Native actors used to speak their lines in English and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera. This Golden Globe is a historic one, and it doesn’t belong to just me”. That moment is reminiscent of the 1973 Oscars ceremony when Apache and Yaqui actress and activist Sacheen Littlefeather denounced the way indigenous people were portrayed on the silver screen. All that was made possible thanks to Marlon Brando, who won the award for Best Actor for his role in The Godfather (1972). The American actor decided not to take to the stage and to send Sacheen Littlefeather in her deerskin dress instead.

Kieran Culkin’s hilarious dig at Pedro Pascal

Awarded the Golden Globe for “Best Actor in a Drama Series” for his role in the cult series Succession (2018-2023), Kieran Culkin took to the stage in a teasing mood, with a large smile on his face. Competing against Pedro Pascal, nominated for his performance in the series The Last of Us (2023), the actor directed a hilarious dig at his friend, letting out: “S*ck it Pedro, it’s mine”. No quarter given, even in friendship.

Emma Stone’s moving speech

Another highlight of the 2024 Golden Globe Awards was Emma Stone’s moving speech as she won the Golden Globe for “Best Actress in a Comedy” for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things (2023). In just a few minutes, the American actress offered a series of heartfelt thanks to her relatives, who attended the event. A banal discourse all in all, yet the protagonist of La La Land (2016) ended her monologue with a beautiful message of hope: “Playing the role of Bella was unbelievable. I see this film as a romcom, in the sense that Bella falls in love with life itself rather than a person. She accepts the good and the bad in equal measure. That really made me look at life differently. All of it counts and all of it is important. Bella has stayed with me deeply.”

Timothée Chalamet’s and Kylie Jenner’s “love bombing”

Sitting down in a corner of the room, the two young lovebirds seemed to have forgotten the presence of the cameras... Nominated in the “Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical'' category for Wonka - an award that Paul Giamatti eventually won for Winter Break - Timothée Chalamet came to the 2024 Golden Globes with his girlfriend Kylie Jenner. Although their romance is still new, the couple has been spotted cuddling and pretty much in love. The Kardashian’s golden child gently touched the young actor’s necklace before kissing him in front of the cameras - which they probably thought were turned off. Indeed, the sequence was filmed during a commercial break.

La blague de Jo Koy à l'encontre de Taylor Swift lors de la cérémonie des Golden Globes 2024.

Jo Koy’s inappropriate and failed joke about Taylor Swift

What would an awards ceremony be without failed speeches and interludes? This year, the award for the worst joke goes to comedian Jo Koy, who made fun of the music star Taylor Swift. While the latter is currently dating American footballer Travis Kelce, the host joked about what marks, according to him, the “big difference” between the Golden Globe Awards and the National Football League: “Here we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift”. A comment that didn’t make the artist laugh at all, as she has often found herself being the target of critics. A few years ago, she was the victim of numerous jabs from Kanye West.
