Launched in 2013, the LVMH prize has established itself as the one of the most prestigious prizes in the fashion world, serving as a veritable springboard for up-and-coming designers as well as a talent detector for professionals in the field. In September 2019, the fifth annual event chose the South African designer Thebe Magugu as the winner of its Grand Prize and Israeli designer Hed Mayner for the Karl Lagerfeld Award.
In addition to its eminent jury made up, among others, of Nicolas Ghesquière, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Clare Waight Keller and Jonathan Anderson, the LVMH prize calls upon a committee of experts that brings together journalists, photographers, stylists, models and other influential personalities in fashion and luxury. Together, from a selection of 20 designers who have made it to the semi-final, they chose the new finalists for the prize. As we near the semi-final for this year, set to take place on February 27th and 28th, the committee has added 9 new experts including the famous American model Gigi Hadid, who will also be the ambassador of the showroom. Other new members are the artistic director Ronnie Cooke Newhouse – also on the jury for the next Festival d’Hyères –, the Irish writer and activist Sinéad Burke and the stylist Ibrahim Kamara, also fashion editor-in-chief of the magazine i-D. They will be joining the journalists Suzy Menkes and Loïc Prigent, the models Karlie Kloss and Natalia Vodianova and the founder and editorial director of Numéro, Babeth Djian, forming a committee of nearly sixty experts in total.
