A 12-meter high aluminium female robot dominated the Dior Homme 2019 pre-fall runway show on November 30th in Tokyo. Made by the Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, this impressive statue echoes the celebration of femininity that made couturier Christian Dior famous. In this futuristic décor, the metallic silhouette was bathed in luminous green, violet, midnight blue and cherry blossom pink spotlights.
Beyond the scenography, Sorayama also helped reinvent the brand’s logo with the initials CD becoming more graphic and iridescent. The artist also inspired certain accessories in this pre-collection. His influence was particularly noticeable with Kim Jones’ choices of themes and use of certain brilliant and lustrous materials. Indeed, Sorayama’s robotic and industrial imprint formed a common thread throughout this menswear collection with countless metallic effects. His work also made an impression on the jewellery (necklaces, rings, chains with nuts), baseball caps that appear to be made of steel and not forgetting the Saddle bag, now available in a polished metal version. Surreal pieces that align Sorayama’s imagination with Kim Jones’ visionary spirit and razor sharp sense of detail.
