For the new capsule Off-White collection, Virgil Abloh pays tribute to New York painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose works boldly contrast with the monochrome of the pieces in this streetwear collection. The artistic director at Louis Vuitton has thus taken the anguished figures, crowns and emblematic repetitive scriptures of the artist, and added the words “REVENGE” and “POST MODERN”.
As a fundamental link with New York’s street culture, Jean-Michel Basquiat has long been a major influence on the creative process of the Off-White label. Politics, poverty and segregation have steadily permeated his ‘Made in Brooklyn’ work. Last year already, Virgil Abloh was busy fusing art and politics for his collaboration with the American artist Jenny Holzer.
