For the 2016/17 Pirelli calendar, Peter Lindbergh followed in the footsteps of portraitist Annie Leibovitz. From Nicole Kidman to Uma Thurman and Julianne Moore, 14 actresses posed in front of the German photographer who illustrated the Pirelli calendar for the third time, having previously done it in 1997 and 2002. Through individual black and white shots, Lindbergh evokes the intimate and authentic beauty he is known for in a new book “Shadows on the Wall”. “My perception of poetry is related to frankness, and once again with being authentic and personal, starting with the unique individual that you are,” he explained.
Peter Lindbergh values the power of the image and the vigour of the silhouettes as opposed to an artificial beauty retouched in post-production. “There is this devastating religion where absolute perfection and youth have become the most important criteria to define women,” he says regretfully.
